Hillsong Sydney

Tell us a little about yourself – what’s your origin story?
I was a young teen who was relentlessly bullied at high school, but there was one girl there (Belinda – props to you out there somewhere) who was beautifully persistent at inviting me to church, and getting her family to pick me up and bring me. I eventually joined the youth group and got saved through Alpha at around age 14 or 15. And 25+ years later, I’m still walking with God.

What led you to Alpha, and what was your experience like? Did it match your expectations?
I found out about Alpha via my church – Sally and Gavin (amazing humans) ran the first Youth Alpha in Australia for our youth group. I was curious, and also still not quite sure in my faith yet, so it was a good opportunity to discover more.
It’s hard to remember much of the experience 25+ years later! However, I have positive memories of good discussions where we got to ask whatever was on our mind. And there were always snacks. Fellowship should always have food!

Was there a moment of encounter?
Yes. We did the Holy Spirit sections on a weekend away in a bush retreat outside of town. I remember coming out of one of the sessions, looking around at the stunning surroundings and just getting blown away at the bigness of God. I broke out into singing – I couldn’t hold it in. I still desperately love getting out into nature, as it’s where I feel the majesty and presence of God most clearly.

How has Jesus changed your life?
He walks with me. In a lot of ways, I’ve lived a very ordinary life. But I haven’t walked it alone. And knowing that I am not alone has kept me walking. And over time, I’ve learned that it’s not just about me, but that I can help be Jesus to other people and walk with them as well.

What would you say to someone who is curious about or considering Alpha?
Do it. And ask lots of questions. The glorious thing I remember about Alpha was that you were encouraged to ask questions, so that you could grasp your own revelations, not just rely on second-hand understanding.
