True North Church
Alpha was unlike anything I expected. It provided a space where I could be vulnerable and inquisitive without judgment. The diversity of the group and the openness of the discussions ignited a profound curiosity within me. I frequently asked questions, driven by a genuine desire to understand what faith truly entailed. The first session’s topic, ” Is There More To Life Than This?”, struck a chord with me, especially during a period filled with so many questions. Engaging with various perspectives during the sessions, I began to challenge and dismantle my preconceptions about faith and happiness. Often, after an Alpha session, I spent hours on YouTube learning more about the topics covered. The personal stories shared in the Alpha videos deeply moved me. These stories opened my eyes to the universal evidence of faith, available to anyone willing to see it. Alpha also helped me recognize the value of being part of a community. My first Alpha experience had such an impact on me that I decided to do it again after a term break. I also began attending church, where I experienced the same friendliness, warmth, and genuine care that I found in my Alpha group. This environment deepened my appreciation for community. I learned how being vulnerable and opening up to others, each with their own stories, builds real connections. These connections consist of people who genuinely care and are willing to support you through life’s challenges and celebrate its amazing moments with you.
About 18 months after starting Alpha, I realized the significant, albeit subtle, role God had always played in my life through the Holy Spirit. This realization came powerfully during my second Alpha course, compelling me to fully embrace Christianity and undergo baptism. My faith journey extended beyond acceptance; it evolved into growth and outreach. Participating in more Alpha sessions in a helper role, and attending a Soul Care course by Rob Reimer, I discovered a community where I could share my experiences and insights, especially concerning men’s mental health, a topic that is being discussed more since my video testimony was first shared in church.
Since Alpha, my life has undergone tremendous change.
I’ve stopped drinking – something which I never expected to do so easily. I have also begun phasing out antidepressants, and each week, I grow into a better version of myself through my faith and community involvement. I’ve found a profound sense of peace, something I lacked before Alpha. This transformation has empowered me to support others facing their own struggles and to share the profound impact faith has had on my life. I no longer struggle with depression or suicidal thoughts. However, like almost everyone, I still face life’s challenges at times, but my faith, my newfound community, and God’s love have helped me get through the hard moments in life without having to turn to medication or alcohol.
